Managing health & safety risks from 3D printing

3D printers generate large numbers of ultra fine particles (UFP's) and volatile organic compounds (VOC's). They can cause serious health hazards according to for instance Chemical Insights and Georgia Institute of Technology. 

Steps to mitigate health risks. Our advice is always to assess your workplace, operation procedures and procuring to avoid health risks. Carefully investigate your atmosphere management and filtration options. Each situation may vary on how to deal with air-quality risks. Some factors of importance are the kind and quality of your filament (note that also PLA can cause health risks), extrusion and build
plate temperature, the amount of 3D printers, usage intensity and room conditions.

We advice to use a combined filtersystem which takes maximum care of UFP and VOC emmissions. For instance a DeepPleat DUO pre-filter with carbon filter (ACF) technology and a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter. Decide if you opt for portable or fixed technology. A portable system like a cabinet or a vent-to-air, which will require extraction via an external wall. We urge you to read the manual of your Ultimaker carefully on this matter.

Ultimaker Air Manager

The Ultimaker S5 Air Manager removes up to 95% of all ultrafine particles. It features a quiet 140 mm fan. This has been optimally positioned to create an inside-out airflow, which pulls the maximum volume of air through a high-efficiency air filter. And that filter is big, making it effective for longer – before Ultimaker Connect tells you when to replace it.

You can easily install the Ultimaker S5 Air Manager without tools, via a sturdy bracket and a single cable. All other functionality is handled by (and regularly improved via) Ultimaker S5 firmware and Ultimaker Cura software.

This includes material-matching fan speeds. Now embedded into Ultimaker Cura's predefined print profiles, they ensure that the fan and filter operate at optimal efficiency the whole time you're printing.

Keep your prints safe, as well as your workplace

Finally, by fully enclosing the build chamber, the Ultimaker S5 Air Manager stops anyone interrupting a print by touching hot or moving parts. And it maintains a more stable print environment inside the printer.

While we've found this slightly improves print quality for some materials, it certainly gives you more freedom 3D print where you want. In drafty locations, near air conditioning units – the choice is yours, knowing that the build chamber is protected from unwanted airflows.
